BIG IDEA:
Student will create a symbolic symmetrical design using layered paper.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
KEY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
BALANCE In ART: A harmonious or satisfying arrangement of proportion of parts or elements, as in a design
SYMBOLISM:
Symbols are important because they have meaning to human beings and they are a form of communicating ideas in a visual form. Letters and words are symbols of various concepts arranged in a way that transmits meanings while numbers are other symbols representing concept. Musical notes are symbols as are pictures in a gallery.
What Creating a Personal Symbol Can Facilitate for Us:
DESIGN PROCESS:
1. Select how you are going to begin your design. Will you choose lines and shapes? A personal visual symbol? YOur name? A powerful word?
2. Using11x17 newsprint, divide into fourths, Create a design in one rectangle. (Be sure to have Mrs. G. approve before you move the the next step.
3. Retrace onto the other rectangles and fill in the positive space.
4. Select your color schema and especially your top layer.
5. Place newsprint on top of top layer and secure.
6. Begin cutting on lines. Cut in a systematic way and don't go from one place to another.
7. When finished with top layer - cut off any stray edges
8. Place another colored paper underneath the top layer. Choose color wisely. What are you trying to convey wit the color? Cut lines around the pattern to show bottom paper. Repeat. Repeat . Repeat.
9. Final paper will be background paper.
MAGNET THEME CONNECTION:
Student will create a symbolic symmetrical design using layered paper.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
- How might art relate to the fundamentals of math concepts?
- What does symmetry communicate to you?
- How might geometry and symmetry relate to physics and culture?
KEY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
- Students will discover and view patterns in Rose windows, Eastern architecture and art, and stained glass designs of Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Rennie MackIntosh
- Student will recognize the importance of personal and traditional symbolism

MAGNET THEME CONNECTION:
- The proportions within the Golden Ratio are commonly utilized in art and architecture to obtain maximum aesthetic harmony.
- To gain understanding of shared concepts between art and math students need to investigate with, and explore the world of geometry through discussion and hands on activities. Complex patterns based on geometric shapes and forms explore mirror, radial and cylindrical symmetry can be created while practicing measurement.
