BIG IDEA: Students will overlap shapes to create the illusion of depth while demonstrating basic weaving techniques and merging two works together to create a greater composition.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: How might difference in color and texture change the mood of a piece of work and how will these differences effect the overall composition and design of your work? KEY KNOWLEDGE:

Cultural Background: Weaving traditions originated in response to both utilitarian and cultural needs that were never associated with export, sale or trade to outsiders. The sources of the designs and patterns found on the earliest archetype examples have ancient roots and are believed to carry important non-secular connotations and meanings.
For example it is known some groups, particularly those from Turkmenistan, considered certain examples of their weaving culture to possess spiritual and magical properties. Since the Turkmen as well as all the other indigenous weaving cultures were non-literate, the roles such weaving played in shamanic and other clan-based ceremonies and rituals can only be gleaned from their oral traditions. Needless to say these treasures of the loom, as well as others from other areas, are shrouded in both history and mystery.

MAGNET THEME CONNECTION:
3-D weaving or 3-D fabrics is a growing category of products used primarily in highly performance-driven composite applications. Such applications range from jet engine components and engineered shapes to composite billets for bulkheads and ballistic armor panels.

STUDENTS WILL:
- DESIGN PROCESS:
- Create a contour drawing of an animal, portrait, landscape, idea to be approved by Mrs. G.
- Have Mrs. G. approve your drawing when you have completed the contour drawing. Make sure you are filling up at least 3/4 of the paper with your design. Look at your spatial relationships.
- Go over with sharpie and "differentiate" your line quality.
- Copy image through xerox machine. You need 2 copies and also your original as a back up before you start to color!
- Color both designs completely differently to show contrast. Create form and shadow.
- Weave together - add embellishment.
